  1. Siobhan Murphy says:

I was lucky enough to attend the premiere of Matariki at the Toronto International Film Festival and was extremely impressed. A single act of heroism in the face of violence knits together five stories to form a portrait of the multicultural community in South Auckland. The film follows diverse and often marginalised characters who are each forced to deal with the fallout of this criminal act. Their stories are told with sensitivity and hope. Strong performances, beautiful cinematography (the use of light and dark to evoke mood is wonderful) and a fabulous sound track combine to create a beautiful film of transcendence.

Director Michael Bennett addressed the audience prior to the film and engaged in a Q&A following it. I know I was not alone in being stunned to learn that this was Mr. Bennett’s first feature length film. The audience appreciated that he considered every question carefully and gave thoughtful answers to each of them.

It was a privilege to attend this amazing film and enjoy an excellent Q&A session.
